A resume objective is a positive statement that shows the employer that you understand the needs of the organization, and that you can be an asset to the business. A well-written resume objective does a great job of arresting the attention of the employer, who then tends to read the rest of the resume with a more open mind.
A Resume Objective Statement is advantageous to:
- FreshersA recent graduate in Advertising from XYZ college, with internship-experience in a leading Advertising agency ABC, seeking the position of Advertising Associate, where my creative skills and enthusiasm can infuse fresh concepts in advertising.
- Students applying for internships or trainee positions.A responsible and enthusiastic undergraduate student in electronics from XYZ school, seeking an internship of 3 months working on a project that will benefit from my analytical and technical skills, and will help gain insight into the working of the industry.
- Job-seekers who do not have much experience.HR Trainee with an experience of 1.5 years, seeking the position of HR Associate, where good interpersonal skills and familiarity with the HRIS system can aid the department in better rapport with personnel.
- People who are looking to change fields/careersA retired employee of the Heavy Electricals Industry, with 35 years of experience in industry, sales, and management, seeking to put skills and abilities to use in training students of Electrical/Electronics Engineering to become responsible engineers of the future.
But there are instances when an objective statement doesn't work well:
- You might be sending your resume to a company where there are many openings in for which your skills and qualifications might be suited. In such cases, a statement of objective can restrict your opportunities
- If you are participating in a job fair or a career exposition, you will need to have many copies of your resume to hand around. In such cases, you have no idea who is going to receive your resume, and so an objective statement will not work at all. In fact, the objective statement is effective only when it is specifically tailored to suit the company and the position you are applying for. So, in a career fair, the very objective of having an Objective statement is lost.
- When you are submitting a resume to a job site
- When you are just passing your resume around among your contacts.
- If you have many years of experience – When you have worked for many years, and have accumulated various skills and abilities, it is not possible to condense it all into a statement of objective. It will not show up your skills to your advantage.
In all these cases, and especially for instance 5, a "Summary" section or a "Profile" section at the beginning of the resume will work best for you.
A summary section might look something like this:
A top-level professional with 12 years of experience. Inspirational leader with a global perspective on Strategic consultancy. Well-travelled to 15 countries for business development and delivery. Expertise in strategic consulting, business process consulting, business performance management. Winner of Best Employee awards for five years in succession. Member of XYZ organizations.
A profile section looks somewhat like this:
Professional Highlights:
- Currently working in XYZ as Market Development Consultant.
- Skilled in communications management, strategic insight and sharp planning.
- Recognized for idea generation, operational excellence, collaborative work style, and attracting and motivating talented resources.
- Performance-driven, with excellent communication skills.
Areas of expertise:
- New business development
- Marketing
- Finance and budgeting
- Media planning
- Event management
- Negotiation skills
Career Highlights:
Worked with Org A as X.
- Delivered USD 1 Mn for every quarter....
- Closed a lucrative deal with X company for a potential business of USD 10 Mn
Worked with Org B as Y.
- Established online presence for the company,
- Implemented marketing communication strategies.....
And then, after this, the detailed resume.
So, you could consider using a Summary or a Profile to make that good first impression.
