With a good number of years of experience behind you, you'll be gunning for Executive and Senior Management posts. At this level, apart from your education and experience, you will have something more - A corporate identity, if you will, that is uniquely yours. So it follows that writing an impressive resume for a senior-executive or senior-management positions is a totally different ball game.
Senior-level jobs are fewer in number, and there is greater competition for them. The stakes being higher, your resume needs to be top-notch.
Senior-level jobs are fewer in number, and there is greater competition for them. The stakes being higher, your resume needs to be top-notch.
Hiring and recruitment for senior-level executives is crucial for the company. And chances are that your resume will be reviewed by people at the top – the CEO, the VP, or Board members. These executives will be looking for something more than just what your experience is. They want to know about what you, as a person, can do for the company. They want somebody with vision, someone with the confidence and know-how to follow up on that vision. So your resume must reflect all that.
Before you actually get around to writing a resume, there is something vital that you must remember to do – the Groundwork.
- Research the company you are applying for, and the position. Is the company doing well? Are its stock prices rising? Has it been affected by the entry of a competitor? Is it going through rocky times? Or is it riding on a wave? Your research must be thorough.
- Now, with this background in mind, you will get a fair idea of what the company needs. Do they need a different marketing strategy? Do they require fresh blood? Do they need some stability?
- Now, jot down all your strengths, based on your previous accomplishments.
- Finally, see which of your strengths match the requirement of the company, and make that the focus of your resume. If the company has been shaken by the entry of a competitor, you must prove that you know enough about developing marketing strategies that could bring the company back on the playing field. You must have the facts and figures to back up your claim. And though the resume must definitely contain all your other skills and expertise, a focus on this skill of yours will help the recruiter know immediately that you have done your homework, and that you are a strong contender for the job. The aim is to show the employer that there is a match between their needs and your skills. This will give you an edge over any competition.
If you are applying for a position at multiple companies, then this groundwork must be done for each of those companies, and you must have different versions of your resume to send to each of those companies. Please note, this is not lying or cheating. All you are doing is highlighting in each resume, that skill of yours which the company can make use of at that moment.
Writing a senior-level manager or executive resume is much more work, but the payoffs are greater. But it is not that difficult to write a good resume, as you'll see in the next post.
