Watch out for "Speling Misteks!"

Most recruiters concur that Spelling Mistakes are the top reason for them to reject a resume. The resume needn't even be full of mistakes – just one mistake, and your resume could fly into the nearest trashcan.

Here is a selection of hilarious spelling mistakes – that would elicit a guffaw, yes, but will definitely cost you your job!

Many people are highly intolerant of spelling mistakes, and they don't read further if they encounter one. Of course, there are others who are more lenient, and might deign to read further, but you can be sure that your resume already has a black mark against it.

But why do simple spelling mistakes provoke such strong reactions?

Simply put, a resume is one of the most important documents you will ever write, and if you cannot get even that right, then what does it say about you? Spelling mistakes in a resume give the impression that the candidate is not professional, is careless, and doesn't pay attention to detail. And that is an impression you just cannot afford to give the recruiter.

What you must do to ensure that your resume is mistake-proof:

  1. Proofread, proofread, proofread.
  2. Use spellchecking software. But note that though a spellchecking program takes care of most mis-spellings, there are words that it cannot catch. It is not a foolproof solution. For example, if you have written "Looking forward to an exciting carrier," it will not catch the mistake, since Carrier is a valid English word, and your resume will go forward to be read by someone who will be left wondering what can be so exciting about a carrier and why anybody would want it.
  3. Get your resume reviewed by someone who is good at the language. Common mistakes like mixing up similar sounding words can be weeded out by someone with a keen eye and a good hold on the language.
    For example: accept/except, affect/effect, lose/loose, ensure/insure, then/than.
  4. Be specially careful about acronyms/technical terms that you use in your work – be they related to organizations you are in, or the technology you use.
For example, if you say, "Led the company to achieve ISO 1401 certificate" (Instead of ISO 14001), then your claims will be treated with suspicion.
Or if you say, "QSM and QA expert" (Instead of QMS), which could be just a typing mistake, you can bid the job goodbye.
"Java Struts" for example, is frequently mentioned as "Java Strut", making one wonder whether the candidate really knows what he is doing.

Spelling mistakes and typos happen with the best of us. But there are a few people who are inherently bad at spelling, but are outstanding at their jobs. It is unfair to their abilities to be judged by the spelling mistakes they make. So it is of utmost importance that they need to pay special attention to their resume. And if they find that they still cannot do it themselves, it is always worthwhile taking the help of professional resume-writers.

Really, better be "sef then sory"!
